Everybody is still taking about Sunday’s BET Awards. Although Samuel L. Jackson wasn’t the most
entertaining host and some of the performances were mostly bleeped out, there
were still some great moments. Check out
my favorite moments down below:
-The Whitney Tribute: This Whitney Tribute I loved the
most. It just seemed like a lot of
thought was put into it in order to celebrate her life. I looked at it like a
second line that a deceased person would have in New Orleans: We got to cry, mourn, reminisce, and
dance. Monica sang like she was
auditioning for a record deal; her voice is strong and soulful. Secondly, Cissy Houston…how can you not feel
for her? No mother should have to bury
their daughter. However, she touched
everyone singing a “Bridge Over Trouble Water.”
BUT I’m giving the stand out moment in the tribute to none other than
BRANDY!!! WHEN I SAY BRANDY GOT DOWN!!! She was flawless! Performing “I’m Your
Baby Tonight” and “I Want To Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me),” we got to
see a side of Brandy that we haven’t seen in a while. You have to give props when it’s due. She
sang live, she danced with her background dancers, and stayed on key. Not to mention she was animated while doing Whitney
Houston justice. I screamed like a little girl during her whole set. Brandy is
back!
-D’Angelo’s performance: Yes his outfit and hair was
awful. He looked like they caught him
right off the prison bus! But his voice
is undeniable. If you closed your eyes during the performance you would swear
it was the year 2000. And when D’Angelo
got on the piano…ggiiirrrllll! Thank you
BET for letting D’Angelo groove!
-Beyonce Checking Mindless Behavior: I loved the fact that
during her acceptance speech for Best Female R&B Artist, Beyonce checked
Mindless Behavior for that tacky Lauryn Hill joke. Yes, Twitter and the whole world agreed that
it was too soon. These little boys are
Another Bad Creation 20 years later. They
have barely hit puberty but feel the need to make a joke about Lauryn Hill and
her tax situation? Lauryn Hill’s music is timeless and she paved the way for
female artists (as Beyonce kindly mentioned).
Boys will be boys I guess.
-Maze feat. Frankie Beverly:
The Lifetime Achievement Award was way overdue. The greatest parts though were Frankie
Beverly’s acceptance speech and the performance. I two-stepped my way through
the whole performance. Tyrese is always
in somebody’s tribute…but when he got down with Frankie Beverly and Maze…I
almost screamed: “Alright chocolate Ty!!”
-There’s a three-way tie for my last favorite moment: It has to be Beyonce and Jay-Z squaring off
(their love is special), Jay-Z interrupting Kanye (Taylor Swift probably could
careless), and Nicki Minaj yelling at the end of her acceptance speech “Step
Your Di*k Up” (it was so random).
